Best Tennessee Online Casinos 2024: Play Legally and Safely!

Veronica Foster Publication byV. Foster

There are very few states that turn from being staunchly opposed to gambling to finally opening up their doors to online or in-person betting. Tennessee is one such state! While the Volunteer State began as a passionate opponent against all things gambling, from in-person casinos to racetracks to online casinos, they have quickly turned a dime for the better.

Tennessee now allows players to partake in legal sports wagering and has done so since 2019. The next year, in 2020, Tennessee allowed players to gamble online on their favorite teams using various sports gambling sites.

They are one of the only states that allow sports betting completely alone! While there are no casinos in Tennessee and no real money online casinos, you can still enjoy your favorite casino games at social casinos as well. Here’s a quick rundown of Tennessee online casinos and laws!

Tennessee Online Gambling Laws

For those wondering, “Is online gambling legal in Tennessee?” the answer is a resounding “no.” But, no worries. There are still ways you can bet on the Internet and not violate the state’s laws on online gambling.

One such law is Section 39-17-501, which explicitly states that all forms of betting that depend on the outcome of an event or by chance are outlawed in the state, both online and in person. This means there are no casinos in Tennessee despite its booming tourism industry.

In addition to Tennessee casinos being outlawed, there are also no live racetracks in the state, and no way to bet on live races in person. While these laws might appear strict compared to other states, it’s important to know that some changes are happening quite quickly that might be able to legalize online casino gambling someday.

For instance, bidding online with sports betting sites and placing wagers for non-profit charity events is perfectly legal. However, if you choose to bet with an unlicensed site, you’re committing a crime under Tennessee Code Annotated § 39-17-502!

How Does Tennessee Regulate Gambling?

Tennessee is unique in that it’s one of the only states that doesn’t regulate casino gambling per se, but does regulate its sports betting sector quite rigorously. It’s the job of the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council to oversee all things related to online sports betting in the state.

One of the most important jobs of the Council is to ensure that people are betting on licensed and regulated sites. Regretfully, even though some websites may appear to be completely legitimate and safe, you cannot trust them if they have not been registered and regulated by the Council.

It’s best to check their website for the latest updates before placing a bet. While the Council can handle complaints, it cannot enforce laws for offshore sports betting sites. This means it does not have the power to help you earn your money back if it was taken from a shady site!

In addition, the Tennessee Sports Wagering Council also ensures that these licensed sites are operating fairly and with players in mind. They regulate daily fantasy sports to ensure compliance. If you play online casino games regularly and feel you might have a problem, they also provide resources to help people addicted to gambling.

Lastly, the Council ensures all taxes are reported to the public. Tax audits and report preparations are important pieces of work handled by the regulatory body.

Online Casino Tennessee Gambling

If you want to engage in casino games or play table games, you can still have the chance to do so with sweepstakes or social casinos. These establishments offer casino gambling that’s just as exciting as the real deal! From blackjack games to online slots, live casino games with dealers, and more, these social casinos allow players to have fun and play games for free.

The best online casinos also offer players bonuses like free slot spins on slot games, additional coins to play live dealer games and live table games, and more. These casino sites are perfectly legal and operate by issuing coins to users. You can then use these coins to play your favorite online casino style games or gather them up and enter to win sweepstakes prizes.

While social casinos aren’t the same as the digital versions of traditional gambling establishments, it’s better than nothing! They can also be a great way to introduce you to cash games without risking your hard-earned money.

Tennessee Online Poker

Poker is perhaps the most popular table game in the world, but sadly, that’s not the case for Tennessee. Poker rooms, both in-person and online, are just one of the many forms of gambling that are illegal in the state. There are sweepstakes poker rooms, however, that can be played legally.

Tennessee Daily Fantasy Sports

Daily fantasy sports are one of the few types of legal gambling in the state. Because there are no local casinos in the state, you can only bet on DFS and your favorite players through licensed online sites. Tennessee was the first state to allow its citizens to play Daily Fantasy Sports and bet on their odds through online gambling only.

Tennessee Sports Betting

Tennessee was also one of the first states to allow online-only sports betting. Several sites, like DraftKings and BetMGM, offer some of the best sports betting opportunities for players. They are also licensed by the state!

Tennessee Online Horse Betting

Because horse racing is considered a sport by some means, horse betting is now legal online in Tennessee. Sites like TVG and Twin Spires are good ways to participate in online gambling if you’re interested in parimutuel bidding and horse betting.

Tennessee Lottery

Tennessee gambling laws only allowed the lottery in 2004! Since then, you can purchase tickets at 5,000 retailers in the state to bet on the lottery. You can bet on Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto America, CASH 4 LIFE, Tennessee Cash, Daily Tennessee Jackpot, KENO To Go, Cash 3, and Cash 4. However, online sales of tickets are prohibited.

Tennessee Land-Based Casinos

Unfortunately, you won’t find a casino operator located within the state. That’s because it’s illegal to gamble within state lines in person. However, there are other options for visitors, such as visiting online social casino or sweepstakes websites. In addition, there are some other nearby options.

History of Gambling Legislation in Tennessee

Gambling legislation has changed very little in Tennessee in the past 100 years. Back in 1804, the state was host to exciting horse races and betting on live racetracks. Unfortunately, this time is long gone by, and in the early 1900s, horse racing was one of only a handful of gambling activities that were outlawed by this change in statute.

It wasn’t until 2004 that the state finally opened up to the lottery. Today, the lottery provides crucial funds geared toward education in the state. It, of course, also allows players to win big!

In 2016, Tennessee was the first state to enact legislation on DFS in particular. Fortunately, in 2019, HB0001 became law and legalized sports betting and DFS. To date, this is the latest update on their gambling legislation and laws.
