Serhii Bielyi has been a regular at poker tables in land-based casinos since 2019, experiencing numerous victories in no-limit hold’em. His poker journey saw a significant milestone in his debut year, clinching the title at the IT Poker League on May 23, 2019. He also takes pride in representing the Ukrainian Sport Poker Federation. Serhii’s preferred styles of play include freezeout and bounty games.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Serhii played poker in person approximately 12 times a month, thriving on the excitement. However, the pandemic led to a transition from the tangible atmosphere of physical tournaments to the virtual world of online poker. This shift presented new challenges, notably the absence of subtle cues available in in-person games, such as reading opponents’ intentions through their body language and past plays.
Playing online, Serhii faced the challenge of not seeing his opponents’ faces, many of whom were strangers. Initially, online tournaments often featured new players, sometimes referred to as “fish,” who relied more on intuition than on a solid mathematical strategy. This required a different skill set to navigate the emotional aspects of gameplay.
Despite these challenges, the move to online poker brought its own excitement. Serhii spent two years playing online poker from any location with an internet connection, dedicating many evenings to mastering the game.
Among various poker games, a particular online no-limit Texas hold’em freezeout tournament stood out for Serhii. With over 10,000 participants, it was one of his most challenging experiences. Reaching the final table in his first online poker attempt was a significant accomplishment.
